Why WhatsApp is the new storefront

Priya MenonHead of Merchant Growth

A customer messages your store at 11:47pm. They're holding a credit card and a question. If nobody answers until 9am, you didn't lose a support ticket — you lost a sale to whoever replied first.

For most stores, the inbox is treated as a cost center: a queue of problems to clear during business hours. But look at when the highest-intent messages actually arrive, and a different picture emerges. Evenings, weekends, and the small hours are when people browse with their guard down and their wallet open — and it's exactly when your team is offline.

The math nobody runs

Say 30% of your inbound messages land outside working hours, and half of those carry real buying intent. If even a fraction convert when answered instantly — and don't when left until morning — that's not a rounding error. That's a second storefront you're keeping locked overnight.

  • Speed compounds. A reply in seconds keeps the moment alive; a reply next morning arrives after they've bought elsewhere.
  • Intent decays fast. The gap between "is this in stock?" and "never mind" is measured in minutes, not hours.
  • After-hours has less competition. The stores that answer at midnight are rare — which is exactly why it converts.

The playbook

Treating the inbox as a storefront doesn't mean staffing a night shift. It means letting something grounded in your live catalog answer the predictable questions, take payment, and hand the rest to a human in the morning with full context attached.

  • Answer in seconds, every hour. The first reply is the whole game — automate it before you optimize anything else.
  • Sell from real stock. Never promise what you can't ship. Answers should read from your catalog, not a guess.
  • Close in the thread. Send a checkout link where the conversation already is — don't bounce them to a cold homepage.
  • Escalate cleanly. When it's genuinely a human question, hand off with the whole thread so nobody re-explains anything.

None of this is exotic. It's just refusing to let your best-intent customers sit on read until morning. The stores growing fastest in chat aren't working more hours — they've stopped closing the one storefront that never had to close.

Want to see what that looks like on your catalog? Try the live demo — it answers, sells, and takes payment in the thread, exactly like above.

Keep your storefront open at 3am.

Free to start. Live in an afternoon.
